"How You Can Create a DIY Backyard Room Outback"

At DIY Backyard Rooms our aim is to help people live more relaxed lives by helping them to get the information they need to create their own Backyard Room Outback of their place with some outdoor lifestyle free advice.

At DIY Backyard Rooms we realise that home improvement is sweeping the world. Home-owners are doing everything from remodeling their kitchen and bathrooms to adding a Backyard Room Outback or making the pool area more functional.With the increased number of home improvement TV shows on the air, the home improvement craze is spreading uncontrollably. Probably the most popular show in Australia is Back Yard Blitz who show you how to go about making a Backyard Room Outback of your place giving free advice on outdoor garden living by choosing and completely re designing and renovating their backyard to make it suitable for garden lifestyle outdoor living.

The garden is one of the most important parts of the house that is often neglected as an out door living space and can easily be converted to somewhere where you can relax, have a drink or BBQ and escape the daily grind we all have to endure and there is no need to cut corners in creating your very own DIY backyard Room Outback

If you have been motivated to do something about making a DIY Backyard Room Outback of your place there are a lot of things that you can do yourself like planning, plant selection and furniture selection and things like12 volt mood lighting or solar powered lighting can easily be installed by just about any home handyman, however things like high voltage electrical or gas installations should be left to licensed tradesmen.

The first step to take is to decide what type of area you want this to be taking into account what already exists in your backyard and exactly what you expect to use the area for, like family BBQ's and relaxation or serious entertaining as this can effect the type of areas you need to plan for.

Why stay cooped up inside when you can extend the livable portion of your property by creating outdoor rooms? It certainly isn't difficult to build outdoor rooms. But it does take an appreciation for the "divide and conquer" approach.

We take it for granted that our houses are divided into rooms, but the idea of having similar outdoor rooms may sound odd and the biggest obstacle standing in most people's way is that it doesn't occur to them to divide up a backyard into rooms to maximize its use. The more we become aware of outdoor rooms, the more we can tailor them to suit our needs.

The beauty behind the use of separate rooms in a house is that each room is designed for a different use. Consequently, you can install a component in the kitchen that looks great there, without worrying that it would look out of place if viewed from the bedroom. The same is true for outdoor rooms.

Having separate outdoor living spaces allows you to create different designs for each room. The more successful you are in physically separating one outdoor room from another, the more flexibility you have to diversify without creating an eyesore.

For instance, you may wish to include storage (this could be a seat with a detachable lid) for the cleaning equipment and chemicals in the pool area; however you might not wish to see it from another outdoor room so the answer here would be to screen off the pool area with a tall hedge or fence, effectively creating a room separate from the rest of the backyard.

Just as you can paint or wallpaper an indoor room using a color scheme unique to that room, so you can use color to make each of your outdoor rooms different and you can do this when you select the plants to use in the area.

Think of the elements you need to assemble the floor, wall and ceiling of your outdoor backyard room.

 Here are some examples

*      Grass

*      An alternative ground cover, such as clover

*      Mulch

*      Crushed granite

*      Stones

*      Paving

*      Stepping stones

*      Patios

*      Decks

*      Steps

*      Formal hedges

*      Lattice screens

*      Fences

*      Gates

*      Informal hedges

*      Arbors and pergolas

*      Awnings

*      Sails

You can mix and match these elements, for instance a hedge may form two of your four walls and decorative fencing the other two. If complete screening isn't required, you can also define your outdoor rooms with lower alternatives, for instance, raised beds, containers and furniture. Creating outdoor rooms isn't a one-size-fits-all project.

A "ceiling" is optional for many outdoor living spaces, although it does create an added sense of privacy. Ceilings are necessary only for areas where staying dry/cool is a must.

By default, all outdoor rooms already have floors, the only decision you need to make is does the current floor do the best job. For example, maintenance is always a consideration, and you may decide that a grassy area you've been treading upon for years isn't worth the upkeep (mowing).

You don't want people slipping on anything, you don't want to spend all your time cleaning up debris, and you don't want the neighbors spying on you. In selecting a type of wall to enclose the area, all of these considerations need to be taken into account.

A strong argument can be made, then, for having a fence serve as the wall around a pool, rather than a hedge or a lattice screen. A tightly constructed fence will do the best job of screening out prying eyes. And because it has no leaves or needles to shed, there's nothing to slip on, nothing to clean up.

For meditation gardens, some of the concerns are the same, some different. Privacy is still very much an issue (since secluded settings are more relaxing than open settings), as is maintenance. But safety goes on a back burner. Here, reflection, not physical activity, takes center stage. Aesthetic considerations, consequently, will carry greater weight.

Most people find plants more relaxing than hardscape, so consider planting hedges to form the walls of such outdoor rooms. If you don't want to wait for hedges to get tall enough to afford privacy, install lattice screens, instead. To satisfy your requirement for plants and provide further privacy, train vine plants to grow up the lattice. The perennial, climbing hydrangea is an excellent choice for shady areas. You have more choices in the sun, including that ever-popular annual, the morning glory.

For a floor, consider a combination of natural materials. You want something interesting into which to gaze, something with distinct textures. For instance, a rustic flagstone patio, with scotch moss planted in the cracks between the stones -- or creeping thyme, if you enjoy landscaping with fragrant plants.

In meditation and/or herb gardens, a ceiling may come in quite handy. Here, you'll have to choose between aesthetics and functionality. A vine-covered arbor may appropriate, however if you'd like something more solid consider installing a pergola and covering it with Alsonite or some other material to provide shade from the sun and cover from the rain.

Given their individualized purpose, meditation gardens in particular are outdoor spaces that cry out for accessories. Curios and pieces of yard art can serve as focal points here. Any objects that have special meaning for you are potential accessories, as long as they can stand up to the elements.

 Water shouldn't be banned entirely from contemplative outdoor rooms. If there's any place in our yards for accessories such as garden fountains and waterfalls, surely it's here! There's nothing like the soothing sound of bubbling water to put us into a reflective mood.

If you have kids who enjoy basketball, netball, cricket, golf, football, soccer, or just plain running around, why not set aside a special outdoor room just for them. While a ceiling won't be necessary, walls are a must. You don't want stray balls rolling into the street or wiping out those flowers you just planted in another portion of the yard. A solid fence will probably best serve the role of wall here, something that will easily stop a ball.

Why limit the time you spend in your outdoor spaces to the summertime? many accessories are available that can extend your enjoyment of the yard into other times of the year such as, Outdoor fireplaces, electric heaters and gas heaters are accessories that will keep you warm through late Autumn and allow you to resume your pursuits in early spring. Outdoor lighting is another great "extender," permitting you to enjoy your outdoor spaces under the stars.
